The Department of Ayurveda is started in May 1960 under the Health and Panchayat along with establishment of Gujarat state. In 1979, it was renamed as directorate of Traditional System of Medicine. Again it was changed as directorate Indian system of Medicine & Homoeopathy. The name of ‘Directorate Indian System of Medicine & Homeopathy’ has been changed once again as Department AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani Siddha and Homeopathy on 19th April, 2018 vide resolution No.: MKM/102017/3758/ CHH of Government of Gujarat. The directorate was shifted to Dr Jivraj Mehta Bhavan, Gandhinagar in the year of 1983. To provide qualified and competent technical person to the society, department is nourishing education services. At present there are 33 AYUSH teaching institutions in the state where the courses of Graduate and Post graduate teaching of different AYUSH specialties are conducted, which include 10 Ayurveda and 16 Homoeopathy Colleges, 01 naturopathy and yoga colleges. There are more than 13000 registered practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine (Ayurveda) and 12101 Homoeopathy in Gujarat. (Till December 2013). |
